Jim said that bees won't sting idiots, but I didn't believe that, because I tried them lots of times myself and they wouldn't sting me.

Huckleberry Finn Chapters 1-5:
Timeline
Chapter 1 Huckleberry talks to Miss Watson about Heaven and Hell and says he wants to go to hell with Tom Sawyer, that night he hears a cat's meow coming from outside and sneaks out to hang out with his friend.
Chapter 2 Huck and Tom pranked Jim, Miss Watson's slave, to think that witches carried him around the world and was given a nickle by the devil. They start a gang with some of the local boys and they consider themselves Highwaymen, and they say that if any of the boys tells anyone about the gang the gang must kill them and their families.
Chapter 3 Huck receives a lecture from Miss Watson, and she tells him to pray to get what he wants. A drowned man is found in the river and the town thinks it is his dad but Huck is skeptical. The gang disbands after getting bored from not robbing.
Chapter 4 Huck spends 3 months living with the Widow and attends school, he starts to like the new ways. He spills salt and isn't able to throw salt over his left shoulder and knows that something bad will probably happen. He finds boot prints with a cross in them and knows that his Dad is back. He gives all his money to Judge Thatcher and then he goes to Miss Watson's slave and asks him to do a reading from the magical hairball.
Chapter 5 Huck arrives in his room and his Dad is in his room, and his dad is described as a dirty old man. His dad harasses him for wearing good clothes and going to school, and he doesn't want Huck to be smarter than him. Huck's dad goes to Judge Thatcher to try and get Huck's money but fails, and the Widow tries to gain custody of Huck, but is rejected. Huck's Dad goes to jail and the judge tries to reform him, he sneaks out after he promised to change and gets drunk and passes out on the porch and the judge feels betrayed.
Time Period: I believe this in 1835 because then, it was still acceptable to have slaves; also the way it was written and how they speak you can tell that it was a while ago and to me it makes sense that it would be about that time period.
Perspective: The fact that we have a 12 year old narrator makes it a little more whimsical, because you have his imagination play and leak into the story and it gives it that youthful sense. He tells almost everything that happens and you can tell in the way that Huck talks you get this sense of fun.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 6-11
1.) Pap kidnaps Huck and brings him into a cabin in the middle of the woods, his purpose is to gain Huck's wealth.
1.) Pap kidnaps Huck and brings him into a cabin in the middle of the woods, his purpose is to gain Huck's wealth.
3.) An abolitionist is someone who supports the abolition of a practice, specifically slavery. Huckleberry Finn probably doesn't want to be called an Abolitionist because slavery was supported back then and if you were against it then you were an odd one out.
4.) What Huck does to give himself away:
- bad job at threading a needle
- throw a piece of lead at a rat
- nervous and fidgety
In the Present:
BOYS:
- low voice (way they talk in general)
- way they sit
- personality
GIRLS:

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 12-16
1.) In the story of King of Solomon, two of his wives were fighting over a baby and so to compromise he said that they would split the baby in half and eventually, one of the wives refused to let the baby be ripped in half so she gave the baby up to the other wife.
Jim's reaction to this was ballistic. Jim thinks that King Solomon is crazy for even mentioning the idea of ripping apart a baby.
2.) After the separation, Huck tells Jim he dreamt the whole thing and Jim believed him. After Jim saw all the debris, etc on the raft he realized they had actually gone through that and got mad at Huck for making a fool out of him. I feel like Jim is super naive and innocent and doesn't feel very confident in himself. I like him, but he needs "lots of attention"
3.) He is scared because he is a slave who hasn't been freed and if he gets caught BAD things could happen!!
4.) Huck is very stubborn but always, in the end does what he thinks is right. In this case, it was to apologize to someone who, at the time, wasn't "equal to him". This shows lots of humility.
5.) When five men come to look for escaped slaves on Huck's boat he acts grateful and leads the men onto his boat saying that his family is suffering with smallpox. In fear of getting sick the men keep their distance; out of pity they give him 40 dollars in gold. He feels bad because he feels like he did the wrong things but decides he probably would have felt bad had he given away Jim.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 17-21
1.) When the Grangerford family met Huck and learned about his situation they took him in. They are very kind, successful family. Colonel Grangerford is the man-of-the-house, owning a large estate with over a hundred slaves. Later, you learn that they are actually quite mysterious, having a feud (involving death, etc) with a neighboring family, the Sheperdsons.
2.) I feel like Mark Twain wanted to illustrates the feud and competition between farmers and ranchers at this time.
3.) Huck was obviously very uncomfortable and disturbed, having seen a death of one of the Grangerfords. I feel like having his perspective in this story you get all his feelings. You can tell when he's excited or scared or sad or disturbed. I could tell that this experience, for Huckleberry, was awful.
4.) Huck comes across two men who beg to join him and Jim on their expedition downstream. One man is old and bald and has whiskers and one is younger; both men have tattered-clothes and both don't know each other but had to escape similar situations in the past and decided to team up. When they meet Huck the younger man declares that he is an English duke and gets Huck and Jim to treat him like royalty. The older one declares himself as the long-lost prince of King Louis XVI of France. After a short-while, Huck realizes that these men are liars but doesn't want to cause any fights so Huck continues to go on with it.
5.) The plan is a very interesting way of getting the means to travel more. It is creative but I feel like it could/will get them into trouble in the future.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 22-26
1.) The line "LADIES AND CHILDREN ARE NOT PERMITTED" shows the dynamic of the town. Men probably wanted to come here to escape their real-life obligations and responsibilities. The line “if that line don’t fetch them, I don’t know Arkansaw!" demonstrates this concept.
2.) Jim has so much to worry about, Huck didn't want to add anything else to his plate. I think Huck doesn't find any use in telling him because he plans on leaving the situation eventually. I think Jim already figures that they are fake so, Huck doesn't find any importance in telling him something that is irrelevant.
3.) I think Huck is so fed up with the way the Duke and the King act. He is so ashamed in how awful the human race can be. I feel like this situation is foreshadowing Huck escaping the situation.
4.) The doctor reveals the Duke and the King as frauds by pointing out that their accents are phony.
5.) When the Duke and the King consider leaving in the middle of the night, the King convinces the Duke to stay until they steal the entire family's property. This shows their greediness and evilness.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 27-30
1.) I think people in that time were not only very superstitious but also wanted commemorate those who died. They also wanted to comfort family of the dead.
2.) Huck has now had experience with the outside world, in the beginning of the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Huck is immature and young now, he has not only grown love for Jim and other African American people, he has grown up.
3.) The townspeople used two methods in trying to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were. One of these methods was testing handwriting samples by having each person sign a piece of paper and comparing it to letters that have been sent from the real Harvey. The second method occurs when it is revealed that the brother had a tattoo on his chest and the dauphin and Harvey show different versions of the tattoo.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 31-35
1.) When Jim is captured, Huck feels it's God's punishment for helping a slave escape; when he tried to pray for forgiveness he couldn't get himself to ask for it because he knew, in his heart, that he cared for and wanted Jim to be okay. "All right then, I'll go to hell!"
2.) Huck felt guilty and he knew if he wrote a letter to Ms. Watson, she would just sell Jim anyways. He doesn't want to feel ashamed of helping a black man.
3.) Huck was shocked by Tom's willingness to go against something so wrong in society-standards. “Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a nigger stealer!"
4.) I think Huck has had so much experience with the human race, that 1.) people are cruel, rude, and mean and 2.) he realizes that "natural man" is always there, no matter if you do a right or wrong, you inner conscience will always take over.
5.) Even though Huck's way would probably be more efficient and faster, because Tom and Huck are still young, they are looking for a way that is more lively and fun.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 36-40
1.) Tom wants the escape to be like in the books, as dramatic and AWESOME as possible. Tom is using unsensible tactics to retrieve Jim and he's acting as though Jim is a real prisoner. Huck's motivation of getting Jim back is because he loves and cares for him.
2.) They're talking about telling everyone. They say this because Tom suggested they should dig the hole with picks, but tell everyone that they dug it with case knives instead. They were talking about how immoral this situation was, and the only way to get Jim out is dig him out with one thing, but make them think he used another.
3.) Tom is writing the letters so that people will know that something is up so that they can see his escape plan. Because, after all the hard work they've put into the plan Tom doesn't want it to go without a hitch. He wants something to go wrong so people will see the escape plan that they had for Jim. He gave the slaves instructions so that their plan would go perfectly. Tom's motivations are purely for the glory of the escape.
4.) I feel like it could show satire of making things over-complicated. Huck presents a simple, efficient plan but Tom presents an unrealistic, over-complicated plan just because he wants a more fun experience.
5.) Throughout the book we go on a journey with Huck Finn. The journey starts with Huck believing everything he was told, which he cannot be blamed for. He grows up learning that African Americans were not humans; they were property. Huck says “I knowed he was white inside.” By saying this Huckleberry is trying to say he knows Jim is worth something. He finally realizes that Jim is not an object, he is a human being worth just as much as any white person.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 41-END
1.) She thinks that she has lost Tom and Huck feels guilty because he knows that Tom is alive and he helped the slave escape. His guilt is making him feel like he can't look at her in the face because he feels it would give everything away.
2.) Jim has found love for Tom after they come and save him and when Tom gets shot, Jim is willing to give up his newly found freedom to help Tom. This just shows how selfless and kind Jim is. Jim is grateful and willing to give up anything to help the people who help him.
3) Tom wants to live a life of adventure and he wants people to know that it was him. When he told of Miss Watson's passing and that she set Jim free in her will and they were freeing an already free slave, you could see that he wanted the adventure more than the reward.
4.) Huck is an amazingly written character. I feel like I have gotten to know him and his personality throughout the book. I loved watching him change and grow throughout the book with all his many crazy adventures and trials and good times. You see in the beginning of the book his immaturity but by the end he has learned to love and he is more mature. He has learned so many important life lessons that I enjoyed learning with him in the book. I love Huck!!
